a very important discussion. To many people, learning is a somewhat tedious
task, and if the concept is left to live in their minds, it will hinder their potential
considerably later in life.
Among most students, the slow pace of
learning progress is one of the chief reasons for their academic failure.
Generally, there are two main motives for people to study. First, they want to
be successful. For example, a student may fight his own laziness and do
everything possible to be outstanding in this or that subject in order to hear
words of praise from parents or teachers. It is practically impossible to
underestimate the capability of achievement and recognition for fuelling
efforts.
On the other hand, motivation may also be
provided by a threat factor, which is represented by failing grades and the
attendant consequences at home or school. The longing to avoid such an
unpleasant consequence could drive students into putting in efforts that would
help them score better grades.
This week we are going to look at some of
the more creative ways to avoid the pitfalls and monotony of learning. In
general, motivation holds the key to great success, but above all, helping
others to motivate themselves is illuminating the intrinsic value of education;
it is about showing them that the effort they put into the classroom will pay
off in a way that really matters. Understanding a purpose for one's actions is
core to sustaining enthusiasm and dedication.
The richest way to enhance learning is to
create a study space. While it may work for some people to be in a silent
environment, this environment needs to be 'just right' for some other people,
one that does not cause discomfort or distract them from whatever they are
doing. A study area that causes minimal discomfort and as few distractions as
possible will enhance focus and productivity.
Another ingredient in successful learning
is the creation of an orderly study plan. The plan should be clear; all the
directions are laid out and well-organized to make learning easier and less
overwhelming. It helps in breaking down big tasks into smaller achievable goals
that facilitate steady progress.
Avoiding distraction involves the definition
of focus upon study. Televisions, social media, and other technologies are all
distractors leading to sidetracking one's attention, hence slowing down the
process of learning. It will enable students to give full concentration to
studies.
At the same time, one should not fall into
the trap of rushing with educational work. This might be understood as cramming
or trying to catch up with missing assignments in a rush, after which energy is
burnt out and it becomes very ineffectual to learn properly. Studying in a
steady and deliberative manner creates enthusiasm and commitment on a
continuing basis.
Finally, self-rewarding serves as a great way to enhance motivation. After all, who doesn't love rewards? The thought of being able to introduce activities of pleasure after study goals have been completed
